Tascam DR-40 4-Channel 96kHz/24-bit Digital Recorder with XLR Inputs and Adjustable Mics
|
The recorder features built-in adjustable condenser microphones allowing you to choose an X/Y or A/B recording pattern to meet the needs of your environment and application. A built-in limiter and switchable low cut filter reduce peaks and rumble for cleaner recordings. There are a pair of Neutrik combo inputs that accept XLR and 1/4 connections for terrific flexibility. Built-in mic preamps provide phantom power so you can use external condenser mics. A 3.5mm headphone/line output allows you to connect additional equipment such as headphones or small speakers. The high-speed USB 2.0 port allows you to transfer your recordings to a Mac or PC for editing or sharing.
A built-in speaker allows you to play back your recordings immediately for review. Other features include a dual recording mode and overdub mode and a peak reduction feature. There is a 2-second pre-recording buffer to ensure that you never miss a priceless moment due to pressing the record button too late. There is also a chromatic tuner and a stereo reverb effect. A threaded mounting hole lets you mount the recorder on a tripod for terrific stability. The DR-40 can operate for up to 15 hours from 3 standard AA batteries. It can also use USB bus power via the included cable. An optional AC adapter and external battery pack (sold separately) provide additional powering options.
Features:
Proven high sound pressure design that is perfect for loud recordings such as bands or passing trains. It can be used for recoding quiet sound sources such as lectures or for loud sound sources such as rock bands. |
Peak reduction | When a peak is detected, the input signal level is automatically lowered and recording continues. It is perfect for music recordings that have variation in volume, which can be difficult to listen to. |
Auto level | The input signal level is automatically adjusted according to the input sound volume. This is perfect for recording meetings. |
Limiter | Prevents distortion of excessively high input signals. |
Includes TASCAM's popular VSA (Variable Speed Audition) function from the Trainer Series. The playback speed can be adjusted without affecting the pitch. This is helpful in various situations such as when arranging and practicing music, for slowing the speed of recorded conversations, and for speeding up playback of meetings. * The VSA function is only available when playing back files recorded at 44.1kHz/48kHz. |
When recording meetings or interviews, there are cases where it is difficult to listen to the playback because the volumes of different people vary. In such cases, the level align function automatically adjusts the sound volume for playback, making it easy to listen. |
The XLR/TRS stereo inputs make it possible to connect an external condenser microphone and PA console line-level output in addition to the built-in microphone. Highly reliable locking XLR/TRS connectors by NEUTRIK are used. They can be used for supplying phantom power, so general condenser microphones can be used in addition to electret type microphones. |
Dual Recording Mode |
The same sound source can be recorded at two different levels. A backup file for clipping can be recorded. |
4CH Mode |
Two different stereo materials can be recorded simultaneously. It is possible to perform simultaneous recording using the built-in microphone and an external input. |
Overdubbing Mode |
A new sound source can be recorded as a separate channel while listening to a pre-recorded sound source. This is perfect for music production. |

DR-40 APPLICATIONS
The DR-40's four-track recording mode gives you several options to record, indicated by LEDs on the front of the unit. The 4-channel recording modes include:
DUAL - Record a stereo signal with a copy of that stereo signal at a lower level. This gives you a safety track you can use in case the main recording is distorted. (See next section for more info)
4CH?? - Record the built-in microphones along with a pair of external mics, like close-up and ambient microphones. Or record the built-in mics along with a balanced line input, such as the feed from a mixer along with the sound in the room.
OVERDUB - Play along with a recording youâ??ve already made to build up a full production or song demo
You can record up to four channels of 96kHz/24-bit audio. Mono and stereo recording is also available. Recording formats include MP3 (from 32 to 320kbps), WAV and Broadcast WAV formats.
Dual Recording records a second copy of your performance up to -12dB lower as a safety track. This mean if your recording gets accidentally distorted, you'll have a backup copy that isn't distorted.
Dual Recording works in addition to the peak limiting and low cut filter features which also prevent distortion.
The Dual Recording mode is perfect for recording your band live. Just set the unit to record and hit the stage without worrying about the recording getting blown out.
The DR-40 has a set of Neutrik® locking combination XLR & 1/4" inputs. These external inputs can accept balanced microphone or line inputs. The microphone preamp includes phantom power and plenty of gain for detailed recordings with condenser microphones.
The DR-40 is one of the only handheld recorders with a balanced line input, for recording the output of a console or other pro audio source. In 4-channel recording mode, you can record the output of a live console while capturing the sound of the room with the built-in microphones.
Attached to the DR-40 are a pair of cardioid condenser microphones. The stereo microphones can be arranged in an XY recording pattern for tight stereo imaging or in an AB pattern for a more ambient recording.
When flipping the microphone orientation, the left and right channels automatically flip for correct stereo placement.
Like most TASCAM handheld recorders, the DR-40 includes playback modes to loop a section of playback or slow it down without changing the pitch, perfect for learning new music. A built-in speaker is included for checking recording without headphones. The Level Align feature smooths out level jumps during playback to help you monitor your raw, unmastered recordings.
A stereo reverb effect is available during playback or recording. Another handy additions include a chromatic tuner and tripod mount.
